In need of a little inspiration for fun activities to do this season? Look no further than the official Quite Frankly Summer Checklist. Be sure to save this document, share this page with friends, or print it out and follow along as we embrace all the exciting elements of the summer season!
Grill Out/BBQ: Gather with friends and family and devour savory meals right in your own backyard. When the sun is shining in the summer months, nothing beats a quaint BBQ or quality grilling session on the deck.
Catch & Release Lightning Bugs: Get in touch with your inner child as you marvel at these mystical insects that light up the night sky in the summer months. Also known as fireflies, lightning bugs have won over the hearts of young and old alike around the world—even those who otherwise avoid insects. Found in every state but Hawaii, did you know these luminescent creatures are neither flies nor bugs, but actually beetles?
Boat Ride: Cruise the open waters this summer with an adventurous boat ride. Whether you’re on a tranquil rowboat at the local lake, a speedboat on the river, or a magnificent sailboat on the ocean, there’s a boating experience for everyone.
Camp Under the Stars: Journey into the great outdoors and take in all the splendor that Mother Nature provides. Tell ghost stories around the campfire and toast s’mores. If a trip to the mountains isn’t in your cards, set up a tent in your yard and project a movie to watch with the family.
Ice Cream: What would an American summer be without a few scoops of delectable ice cream? Find the best parlor in town and create sweet memories to last a lifetime.
Attend Outdoor Concert: Live music outside on a warm summer night is one of the very best things to experience. Plan to attend a show with old friends or make it a romantic date night. If pricey tickets aren’t in your budget, lots of municipalities offer concerts for free, or think outside the box and patron an affordable venue in a nearby town.
Shop Flea Markets or Garage Sales: The summer brings plenty of opportunities for outdoor recreation but there aren’t many that top the cost-effective activity of shopping flea markets and garage sales. Most events don’t charge an entrance fee and they often provide complimentary live music plus light refreshments for a small fee. Take a walk down memory lane and peruse all of the nostalgic offerings.
Miniature Golf: Enjoy a playful round of miniature golf (or hit the real fairways if that’s your thing) to create a lighthearted form of entertainment. Add a dash of competition by challenging the teams to a friendly wager.
Farmers Market Picnic: Indulge in a decadent picnic with fresh foods picked from the local Farmers Market. Choose a special park or other place in nature to set up your checkered blanket and all the picnicking accoutrement. Be sure to pack plenty of iced tea and lemonade— no summer picnic is complete without these refreshing seasonal favorites.
Road Trip to the Beach or Lake: Hit the highway and take a memorable road trip to your favorite beach or lake. Spend an extended weekend visiting the shore, sightseeing along the coast or hiking the lakeside trails. Collect seashells, sunbathe in an inviting beach chair, have fun on the boardwalk, and eat at all the best restaurants— whatever you prefer to do, make time to relax.
Carnival/Festival: An exciting carnival or summer festival creates some of the most enduring memories. For an added adventure, visit your state fair or local amusement park. Ride every attraction, play each of the games and taste all of the treats! What could be more fun than a daring Ferris wheel, game of ring toss, and yummy cotton candy?
Read the “Great American Novel”: Few traditions come close to the rewarding joy of summer reading. Why not make a list of books you keep meaning to read but haven’t gotten around to? Escape into a new world with one of the “great American novels.” Join a book club to engage with fellow readers (of course we recommend the Quite Frankly Book Club).
