Ring Around the Rosie

The month of May is upon us and as we dance around the proverbial Maypole, we have much to contemplate. From Mother’s Day to Memorial Day and all of the spring festivities in between, new energy seemingly surrounds our every step. 

Here at Quite Frankly, we have an entertaining new addition within the Culture Club with Film Club as a bonus feature for monthly sponsors; voicemails are also a brand new option for the production of the nightly show; and there are plenty of exciting announcements yet to be made. 

And at the newsletter, we are proud to usher back returning contributors and also welcome new writers. If you would like to be included in a future issue, please visit us on the forum to share your submissions.

This month, the world also welcomed the announcement of a new Pope in the Roman Catholic Church. 

Did You Know? 

The Pope’s Ring is called The Fisherman’s Ring (also known as the Piscatory Ring). The name symbolizes the Pope’s succession to Saint Peter, the apostle who was a fisherman.

Since the Middle Ages, it has been a tradition for Catholics to kiss the ring when meeting the Pope as a gesture of devotion. 

Upon the passing of a Pope, the signet ring is ceremonially destroyed and a new ring is crafted for the following Pontifical. 

From The Triple Crown of horse racing to crowning our May Queen, to rings ‘on the phone’ with voicemails to rings around the Maypole, and on the hand of a brand new leader of the Church, it’s a full circle moment in time.

Behind the Scenes

The last time we were together like this we were in the dawn of Spring with Easter on the horizon and it already feels like ages ago with birthdays, T-Ball, and a lot of work completed since then.

Film Club returns this month with the second Christopher Nolan film on the agenda, The Prestige, one of my favorite films. It’s a late 19th century battle between obsessive magicians that begs various types of ethical and moral questions. This round of Film Club is extra special because it’s open for everyone and I really hope to see you all there! For those of you who are going to take part in the Film Club, give us your thoughts and feedback via the voicemail system (see below) or on the forum.

In 2013 when Pope Francis was elected I was of course drawn in by the magnitude and the pomp and circumstance of the whole thing, but this is the first time the death and election of a new Pope was something that was a little bit more of a serious personal concern to me given my return to the Catholic faith over the last 4 years or so. Is Pope Leo XIV really that much different from Francis? Is he concerned with becoming a faithful steward and restorer of a Church with a 2,000 year old tradition, or just another bagman for the New World Order? Opinions seem to be mixed at the moment.

Memorial Day weekend once again brings about our trip to New England to celebrate mine and Lauren’s 8th wedding anniversary and our first since renewing our vows last year. We are really looking forward to spending a few days surrounded by nature as a family and getting home in time to cookout for Memorial Day.
